Summer Youth Positions at Longfellow Creek Thistle Street Greenspace

From Kirsten Cook at Earthcorps (via Ron Angeles):

EarthCorps is happy to announce that we will have 20 summer positions for youth ages 13-17 who live in the areas surrounding these public parks: Longfellow Creek Thistle Street Greenspace (West Seattle/Delridge), and Dearborn Park (Beacon Hill/Rainier Valley).

The program description is attached which includes details of the awards, requirements, and park locations. Interested youth should call, email, or visit the EarthCorps website (under "Now Hiring") for more info and an application. (The website will be updated by Monday May 5).

Every year we have over 100 applicants for this program, so if you know a youth who is planning to apply, please remind them to read the application materials carefully so that they include all the needed information- we won't be able to accept incomplete applications.

If you have questions, please contact Beth O'Neil at 206-322-9296 ext. 214

Please forward to others in your network who know of youth looking for summer opportunities. Also, if you know high school students in need of service hours, we have many upcoming volunteer events. An event calendar is available on our website.

Summer Parks Corps 2008

SPC is a work training program for teens ages 13-17. Teens selected for the program will improve their job skills as they work together to make a neigborhood park better for residents, including the native plants and animals who depend on parks and open space.

Parks Corps is 70% physical labor and 30% education and training. SPC also includes a two-night camping trip to North Cascades National Park where participants will work on projects at the park and learn about wilderness ecosystems.

Program Requirements
To apply to the program, teens must:
* Live near the site they are applying for (within about 5 miles). In 2008 the sites are in West Seattle/Delridge and Beacon Hill/Rainier Valley
* Be between the ages of 13 and 17 by the time the program begins.
* Be available for the entire length of the program (4 weeks in July or August).
* Be ready to participate in both the work and the education aspects of the program.
